Officer of the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA) since
March 2012. ARPA is a provincial
not-for-profit, charitable organization made up of volunteers, professionals,
practitioners, academics, business people and locally elected officials
committed to building healthy citizens, communities, and environments in
Alberta through recreation and parks.
Bill’s background includes a
city councillor with the City of Regina for six
successive terms (18 years), with a demonstrated emphasis on recreation and
parks, arts and culture, the environment and the introduction of preventative
public health programs. At the national
level, Bill was a member of the Arts in the Cities Board of Directors, as well
as the Urban Transportation Association. He represented the City of Regina at meetings
of the United Nations’ International Council of Local Environmental
Initiatives.
Bill has been instrumental in taking a lead in actioning
several national level initiatives including the development and launch of the
CPRA Professional Development Certification initiative as well as the hosting
of the 2016 Canadian Parks Summit and 2017 Canadian Parks Conference.
Bill has
worked to introduce new programs within Alberta including the Excellence Series
for Recreation and Parks, Prescription to Get Active initiative and a revamped
Awards and Scholarships program for recreation and parks in Alberta - inc. the
re-introduction of the Lieutenant Governor Awards for Active Communities. He
has also been responsible for creating several new protocol agreements with
partner organizations in the province including recent agreements with the
Alberta Association of Landscape Architects and the University of Calgary
Faculty of Environmental Design.
